Wrinkle Reduction

Everyone ages, and as we get older our skin loses elasticity and we start to get fine lines and wrinkles appearing. The rate we age depends on many individual factors, including skin type, lifestyle and genetic makeup, but it’s impossible to escape altogether. For some people, who are said to ‘age well’, the aging process lends an air of character and authority. Other people find they’re less happy about their appearance as they get older, and that their thinner, less elastic facial skin is making them look permanently tired or stressed.

The lines and wrinkles on our faces are partly caused by the repeated use of our facial muscles as we laugh, smile and frown. The appearance of wrinkles can be reduced by easing the muscles with a natural purified protein called botulinium, more commonly known as Botox®.

What to expect from your treatment

At Ruby Stirling, we understand that taking charge of your appearance may be a big step. We’ll start by talking to you about your suitability for treatment, as well as what you’re hoping to get out it. We’ll also discuss any risks or side effects honestly and openly. All our treatments are personalised to the individual, and administered by a qualified medical doctor.

The three areas most commonly treated with Botox® are forehead lines, vertical frown lines between the eyebrows and wrinkles around the eyes. We’ll discuss each part of the treatment with you, and will never over-treat. We can also enhance the effect with bespoke dermal fillers.

All about Botox®

When injected into the muscle, Botox® blocks the chemical messages sent by the nerve to the muscle and stops it functioning.  Repeated use of the facial muscles throughout your life damages the skin and results in permanent lines in the most affected areas. By stopping the overlying muscles moving, we’re allowing the skin to recover naturally and over time the lines reduce or even disappear. Individual response to the treatment varies, and you may find you have reduced movement in the muscles during treatment, or no movement at all. Giving your muscles a break in this way means that subconsciously you’ll gradually use them less and less, so although you’ll normally need top-up treatments for the first two years or so, after than a single treatment a year will maintain the results.

Botox® has been in use since 1978 when it was used as a muscle relaxant, and the process of using it for cosmetic surgery is completely safe, with millions of people having received the treatment worldwide. Do remember, though, that although Botox® is a very common and well-researched form of cosmetic treatment it’s not designed to replace cosmetic surgery and won’t produce the same effects.

Although the treatment is safe, it’s not indicated for women who are pregnant or  breast feeding, and also for patients taking certain types of medication. We will discuss any contraindications with you before treatment.

Side effects of the treatment are unusual, and may include a small bruise at the injection site. A very rare complication is a droopy eyelid. Any side effects are kept to an absolute minimum by our principle of discussing all treatment carefully, carrying out a full assessment and exercising absolute professionalism when administering the procedure.

What happens during the treatment?

Once we’ve discussed the treatment and gone through any queries or concerns you many have, the process itself is very quick and straightforward, taking only five to ten minutes. The needles used for the treatment are very small, and you should feel virtually no pain. At Ruby Stirling, you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands, as not only are all our staff medically qualified, but we also take great care to ensure clinical, sterile conditions so there’s no risk of infection.

During the process, you may experience some slight but temporary discomfort. Any soreness or swelling should disappear in a couple of hours, and you should take care not to rub the treated area or lie down for four hours after treatment. You can expect to see results after four to 14 days, and the effects will normally last between two and six months, after which you’ll notice you can move the muscles more easily.

At Ruby Stirling, we want to make sure you’re completely happy with your treatment, so we offer a follow-up session after a few weeks and if necessary, a further treatment.
